Hugh Freeze Coached Liberty from a Hospital Bed
Former Ole Miss Coach Reveals How He Managed to Lead
Freeze Faced a Life-Threatening Staph Infection
Hugh Freeze, the former head coach of Liberty University, has revealed how he managed to lead his team from a hospital bed after being diagnosed with a life-threatening staph infection.
In an interview with The Athletic, Freeze said that he was "in a lot of pain" and "very sick" when he was admitted to the hospital in October 2022. Doctors told him that he had a staph infection in his bloodstream and that he could die if it was not treated immediately.
Despite his condition, Freeze said that he was determined to continue coaching his team. He said that he would watch film from his hospital bed and call plays into his assistant coaches.
Freeze said that coaching from a hospital bed was "like a normal game" for him. He said that he was able to stay focused on the game and that he was not worried about his own health.
Freeze's team went on to win the Cure Bowl, which was their first bowl victory in school history. Freeze said that the victory was a "miracle" and that he was grateful to God for giving him the strength to coach his team from a hospital bed.
