The Ligue 1, also known as Ligue 1 Uber Eats for sponsorship reasons, is the pinnacle of French football. Administered by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), it is the country's premier football competition and consistently ranks among the top football leagues in Europe.The league consists of 20 clubs, with each team playing 38 matches during the regular season. At the conclusion of the season, the top three teams qualify for the following season's UEFA Champions League, while the fourth-placed team enters the Europa League. The teams finishing in the bottom two positions are relegated to Ligue 2, the second tier of French football.
History
The Ligue 1 traces its origins back to the National Championship, which was established in 1932. The National Championship was a single-division league that was contested by professional and amateur clubs. In 1970, the league was renamed the Division 1 and became fully professional.In its early years, the Division 1 was dominated by a few clubs, such as Saint-Étienne, Marseille, and Nantes. However, in recent years, the league has become more competitive, with a wider range of clubs competing for the title.
Current Format
The Ligue 1 season runs from August to May. Each team plays every other team twice, once at home and once away. The team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned champion.In addition to the regular season, the Ligue 1 also includes the Coupe de la Ligue, a knockout competition that is open to all professional clubs in France. The winner of the Coupe de la Ligue qualifies for the Europa League.
